The Fast and The Curious
A second fast and all that comes from it.
Last month I undertook a three day fast. To distract myself from the endless mental prompts to eat something, I write a short series of blogs.
As I now begin a second fast I am already feeling a sense of excitement about what random insights will emerge. One I can report already is to do with process.
When I announced my first fast, many people asked ‘why?’ My response was ‘I want to see if I can do it.’ The idea was suggested to me by a friend and I said ‘why not.’ The fact is I was already in a process of changing my attitude to resistant reactions. This came from my work on an aspect of my personality described by the JPAQ Joines adaptive personality framework as ‘The Playful Resistor.’ A growth opportunity for the playful resistor is to be more open to different ways of doing things. You see the playful resistor can fall into an all or nothing approach where success and failure are the only outcomes.
So when my friend said ‘let’s do a three day fast.’ I noticed my resistance and said ‘fuck it.’
The first fast gave me an experience. I did not know what to expect and the whole thing was a learning curve. Now I have had that experience I am more interested in knowing more about fasting. The science, the psychology, the cultural aspects. So this series of blogs will dig a little deeper.
And this is my process. This is a creative process: experience without expectation, be spontaneous, then explore further. Learn and develop. Then do the next thing.
This is the next thing.
